Welcome to POP ART

POP ART is a place-making project delivered by Bedford Creative Arts in collaboration with Artist & Producer Talia Giles from Pride Of Place Bedford to enliven Bedford’s empty high street shops through art.

There are currently around 50 empty units in Bedford town centre. POP ART aims to harness the talent of Bedford’s creative community to rejuvenate the town and showcase local artistic talent.

POP – an acronym for Pride of Place – will provide artists with empty shop windows to display their work; turning unused spaces into loved spaces.

Find out more about the project and all the artists involved to date here.

How it works

BCA negotiates permission with an empty shop’s landlord to exhibit art in their shop window until a new tenant is found. The letting agent will continue to promote the vacant unit throughout the project.

BCA invites local artists to apply for exhibition space.

Artists are matched with appropriate windows and provided with a minimum 2 week-long exhibition period.

Artists install their work using their own resources and remove it after the exhibition ends.

Diana Gaglio & alice hibbert & LIV

20 HaRpur Street, Bedford, MK40 1LB

DIANA GAGLIO is a textile and abstract artist from Bedford, with a degree in Textile Design from Brunel University.  At Brunel, she experimented with a variety of techniques such as Silk Screen Printing, Batik, Etching, Photography, Surface Decoration and Constructed Textiles. Diana now specialises in Knitted Textiles and is passionate about expressing herself in a visual way.

The knitted pieces in the exhibit were inspired by the textures in the bark of trees and the way the free flowing, foliage dances in the wind. The pieces are created using both a Dubied knit machine and a domestic knit machine.

The abstract, colourful Batik pieces using hot wax and ink on cotton, were inspired by leaves and the feel of a bright, sunny day.

After completing her degree, Diana worked for a fashion house in New York and went on to exhibit her art in London, Paris and New York. Diana’s travels around the world have influenced her colourful, tactile pieces.  She loves to observe the textures, lines and curves of all of nature’s beauty.

VIA is a Fine art graduate from the University of Reading and has been making art all her life. She is now training as an Art Psychotherapist, with a desire to concentrate on cross -cultural communication, with a focus on young people.

VIA’s mixed media artworks are influenced by socio economic issues, politics, the environment and world conflicts. These concerns, coupled with the frustration of not being able to directly influence these topics, shapes her artistic practice. She also draws inspiration from her own ethnic background, and relationship with diaspora. These artworks target people to think about their own identities, pasts and futures on a broader scale.

The pieces included in this POP art exhibition reflect her engagement with personal and global issues, using collage, paint and digitalisation to navigate complex emotions and bigger ideas. Her work aims to start conversations about critical topics and their impact on our everyday lives and wellbeing.

Sara Wibberley outside her exhibit at Wellbeing Media Studio

SARA WIBBERLEY

Wellbeing Media Studio, 22 St. Mary’s Street, Bedford, MK42 0AS

If my art were a book it would be titled ‘Tales of an Introvert’

As Anne Frank once said ‘I think a lot, but I don’t say much.’ Therefore, art is my voice and a window into my inner world. I can be myself when I am creating and enjoy the solace and peace it brings me. This is when I am most at ease, and when walking in nature with my two boys and husband - my happy places. I see art as a form of self expression; going from my choice of neutral colours and mark making, helping me to process and express my inner thoughts and moods.

I love to work with natural materials and enjoy the textures and effects they create including wood, linen and cotton. I usually work with black or white acrylic paint and apply it to the ‘canvas’ using mostly rollers instead of brushes as I prefer the spontaneity and effects they create. At times I also include the use of charcoal and inks.

Whether painting on canvas or wood, I like to allow the art to come to life and for it to breathe, allowing raw canvas and wood to show through in places. This all goes along with my search for calm and simplicity, that feeling of being at peace with oneself.

Sara Wibberley is an emerging painter living with her husband and two teenage sons in a small village in rural Bedfordshire.
